Description

Genuine One Penny piece (1d.) mounted on a collectible card in a cello sleeve. Back of card has the following historical summary.

Jeremiah Colman began milling mustard in 1814 at Stoke Holy Cross - a watermill near Norwich. In 1823 he entered into partnership with his nephew James, thus creating the firm of J & J Colman. The 1d. and 2d. oval mustard tins were introduced in 1886 containing 1oz. and 2oz. respectively. In addition to the striped tin illustrated, the tins were made collectable by using labels bearing flags of different nations. By 1900 the flag motif was established as a series with twenty-two national emblems.

In 1899, E.B. Southwell said, "The penny tin pay everybody. The penny pays the farmer who grows the seed, the railway company, the cost of manufacture, making the tin, printing the label, weighing, filling, despatching, the wholesaler's profit, the grocer's profit and everybody is satisfied, including the consumer who gets a supply of excellent mustard for his humble penny".
